Another Portrait Now Complete

Lilibeth André, Megan, Oil, 16x12

I’ve completed Megan’s portrait. I liked the final work. I like her features and coloring. I am including the full portrait and a close up so you can get  a better look.

Although I still haven’t found my favorite brushes since I unpacked from my trip to New Orleans, I had to get some replacements hoping they will turn up. The are probably under a book or something since by the time I got back to my half unpacked supplies, little helper hands had rearranged many things around them.

I like using Winsor Newton brushes for water-soluble oils. I prefer flats.

In the close-up you can better see the color and stroke. This is where you can better appreciate the painterly effect that I like in creating a likeness but not a photo-realistic image. It is more on the impressionist style. It represents what I see under the actual conditions. And painting from life has so much more work because you see so much more depth. Creating it on the canvas is the challenge.

I had my second sitting session with this great model. I refined the drawing by making some corrections on the cheek and one of the eyes. I softened the hair and eyes and did some work on the lips.’

Overall, I added more color and feel good about the progress. I was working to finish the figure and found that we have another opportunity to work on details so next I will work the dress and anything else that pops up along the way.

Working in a class environment is fun. We interact during the breaks and exchange information about our career. Some people talk more than others. Some hum with their earphones so we remind them that we already have very nice music playing. It’s just like a regular family.

Bill, ‘el maestro Kalwick’, is great. He is a wonderful instructor with years of training and experience. And he has a great sense of diplomacy and humor to work with his students. He is very patient with us. He provides individual feedback ushering everyone in a forward direction. It is a truly comfortable learning environment.
