Old Portrait – New Portrait

Tom 09

Lilibeth André, Tom 09, oil, 8x6

I am currently working on a new portrait of Tom. We had the opportunity to paint him last year for class. Last year, I did a small a la prima of him on a 8×6 board. I t was fun to paint it and I left it fresh without reworking it. I used the drama of the shadows to represent his likeness and really enjoyed the piece.

This year, the composition included a light colored background and I like that it gives a nice variety of reflective colors, especially on the skin. I am also painting from a different perspective. In last year’s piece I was painting from a standing position. This year, I am sitting much closer to the model.

This is the work from the first sitting for Tom 10. I expect to have at least one more sitting with the model for this piece.

Master Artist for Via Colori 2010

Lilibeth Andre, Via Colori 09

Via Colori announced that the 2010 street painting festival will include a mural project. The project will be designed by artist Melanie Stimmell Van Latum, and executed by Melanie and 7 other master artists. The collaborative mural project will be made up of eight 12 foot by 13.5 foot panels.  This artwork will be in addition to all the street paintings. Last year alone, there were over 150 artists participating.

I am extremely honored to be one of the master artists on this project and look forward to an exciting time working with Melanie and the other artists to complete this impressive work. The artwork will be framed by a mosaic border created by 55 high school students under the direction Reginald Adams, of the Museum of Cultural Arts, Houston.

This is the 5th anniversary of Via Colori in Houston and my 4th year to participate. I very much look forward to this project. I hope that you can attend the festival on November 20 and 21, 2010, in downtown Houston. The streets that will be painted are Bagby and Allen Parkway, at Heritage Park at 1100 Bagby, 77002.

Lilibeth André, Woman with Basket, detail

The month has come to an end and with it, the last sitting for Woman with Basket. A few touches here and there to wrap it up. I didn’t want to overwork the painting and left a lot unsaid-I didn’t think it was necessary.
